Reviewed 15 October 2026. The Ancestry route requires that you can and plan to work in the UK. Official examples of evidence include job offers and a self-employment business plan; a job offer is not the only form of preparation, and evidence must reflect your genuine circumstances.

The route offers flexible work permission, but the initial application still asks for a real work intention. A vague sentence about finding “any job” tells little about how the move will work. A useful plan connects your skills, the work you intend to do, the steps already taken and the funds available while you establish yourself. It should be specific enough to review without pretending that future income is guaranteed.

Choose a realistic work direction

List your experience, qualifications and target roles. Identify whether the occupation has professional registration or other entry requirements. Record the steps needed before you can practise, not just the title you want. A person may have substantial overseas experience and still need time to complete UK recognition or registration. Keep that practical sequence visible in the relocation budget.

Document genuine preparation

For employment, preserve relevant applications, correspondence, interviews or offers where they exist. Use truthful dates and keep the difference between an application, an interview and an offer clear. Do not pay someone for a fabricated offer or describe an informal conversation as a contract. A compact activity log gives the reviewer an understandable picture of real preparation.

For self-employment, describe the service, likely customers, pricing assumptions, operating needs and the steps to begin trading. Avoid inflated revenue projections. Separate confirmed work from potential leads and identify regulatory or insurance tasks. A basic, coherent plan grounded in your actual experience is more useful than a generic business template full of claims you cannot support.

Connect the work plan to support funds

A work plan does not remove the need to support and house yourself and dependants. Estimate how long registration, recruitment or business development may take and build a household runway. If the plan depends on immediate income, test a slower scenario. This is practical preparation, not a prediction that the Home Office will accept a particular budget. Use current evidence and be clear about who owns and controls the funds.

Plan component Employment example Self-employment example
Relevant background CV and qualifications Experience and portfolio

Make the plan testable without turning it into a promise

A work plan should contain actions that can be checked: target role, relevant background, registration step, employer enquiry or business preparation. Distinguish what has happened from what you hope will happen. Put a date and evidence reference beside completed actions. An honest plan can contain uncertainty; it becomes misleading when future clients or a likely interview are written as confirmed income.

Review the plan with the relocation budget. If a profession requires registration, estimate the real sequence and leave costs as assumptions until quoted. If self-employment depends on specialist equipment or a local licence, identify that dependency. Do not inflate a forecast simply to make the support period appear shorter. A slower scenario helps you decide whether the move is practically manageable and whether more preparation is needed.

Keep immigration evidence separate from career presentation. A CV may present relevant skills positively, but dates, qualifications and experience must remain accurate across the application. Preserve genuine correspondence and do not purchase a job offer or use a business-plan template containing claims you cannot explain. If the facts involve disability, limited work capacity or an unusual work plan, obtain route-specific advice rather than assuming a generic employment paragraph answers the requirement.

Set a review date for the work plan before submission. A withdrawn offer, changed registration position or different business direction should appear in the current version. Preserve earlier versions privately so that the preparation history remains understandable, while ensuring the application describes the plan you genuinely hold at the relevant time.

A practical example

A physiotherapist plans to work in the UK. Her plan identifies the relevant professional-registration steps and does not assume she can practise immediately after arrival. She records genuine employer enquiries and budgets for the period before work begins. The plan aligns skills, timing and funds instead of using a copied statement that a job is already waiting.

Put the plan into practice

Use the accompanying resource to turn the explanation into a file you can actually review. Work through these actions in order; where a point is uncertain, record the uncertainty rather than changing the facts to fit a preferred answer.

  1. Write a one-page work direction based on your real background.
  2. Record genuine preparation and distinguish confirmed facts from plans.
  3. Identify professional or business prerequisites and their effect on timing.
  4. Stress-test the support budget if work begins later than hoped.

Questions to resolve before you act

Could you explain the plan in an interview without relying on a template? Are any offers or clients unconfirmed? Have professional-registration tasks been overlooked? Does the available support cover a realistic preparation period?
